Tonight sees the final performance of Grimm Tales, a new take on classic fairy tales that many will recognise. The cast, which ranges in age fro Y7 to Y12, have worked with Mr Moffat and Ms Gerard to create a piece of physical theatre which will amuse, astonish and perhaps even shock. Unusually this performance is 'in the round' with a new seating set up installed by Mr Storer and his team. The production looks magical with a set and props by the Art department and make up, and costume by Ms Bows and Mr Cawthorne. Lighting is by Mr A Cooper. Look out for the hungry wolf!

Artist Karen Logan has been working with Y9 pupils on a project in the Art department. The project entitled 'Beeline', is inspired by the ‘Graphic Nature’ exhibition at the Millennium Galleries.  The work will be exhibited from the 20th of June in the walkway through the galleries. Four other schools are taking part, involving pupils from Y2 to Y9 in age. Each school will create hexagonal ‘tiles’, some in porcelain, some in fabric and these will be displayed together to create a beehive effect.

Tuesday April 5th sees the return of the annual Tapton Sixth Form 'Murder Mystery Play'. This year, 'Who Killed The Director?', will show the backstage antics of an amateur dramatics group, as they attempt to rehearse a play aptly titled: 'A Stab In The Dark!'.  

The evening involves the audience watching the live action unfold and in between the three acts of the play trying to establish who they think carried out the brutal murder that takes place.

 

Tickets are priced £6.00 with £4.00 concessions for what traditionally is a fun family night with prizes to be won for the team that guesses the correct murderer.

BOTB ...or Battle of the Bands IV.... took place on 14th March 2011. A charity event, it raised £243.47 for Help for Heroes. Six bands in total took part, the age range was across the school. The standard was uniformly brilliant and the judges couldn't decide on an overall winner. They awarded first prize jointly to Line Up 2 and Ecstacy Smiles who shared £100 worth of HMV vouchers between them.

 

Thanks to Tapton DJ group for providing entertainment during changeovers.

Art teacher Sam Cawthorne is taking twenty Y9 students to the Northern General Hospital today to see the work that they made with artist Kerry Blackett installed in the Hands Unit. They also expect to meet the well known Sheffield artist Joe Scarborough. The art pieces are both visual and tactile being made from fused plastic particles. We hope that they will add interest and beauty to the hospital environment.

We  are also lucky to have been able to get some of the work installed in school where it will be seen by everyone in the main foyer entrance. Keep a look out for it next time that you visit.

A well done to all pupils involved and thanks to Mr Cawthorne for organising the opportunity. He promises that pictures of today’s event will follow soon.

Tapton's annual charity event is coming soon and there is an excited atmosphere building as the date approaches. This is particularly true of the 6th form and music department who are putting together a sound fest involving every imaginable group. The list includes the Brass Band, Big Band, Orchestra, Rockappella, Highly Strung, and both the Staff/Student and Girls’ choirs.

Rehearsals are back to back, as voices and instruments come closer to the great performance we have come to expect.

Tickets are likely to be snapped up as soon as they hit the street (corridor?), so be sure to make a note of the date APRIL 6th

Powerplus is a project which aims to stimulate and enhance the composing skills of young music students in Sheffield Schools. It is directed by Sheffield Music Advanced Skills Teacher Robin McEwan.

  

A small number of Y10 students will be out on a trip on the morning of 10th March and the afternoon of 30th March. They are going to the Crucible Theatre to hear their compositions performed by professional musicians.

Look in the corridor on the way into art and you will notice a wall covered in wonderful worksheets. This is some of the output from a very successful Y8 art trip to the Industrial Museum at Kelham Island. There pupils were able to follow a programme of study in 7 areas covering a range of tasks using different media. This will enrich their current project which is based on mechanical objects and leads to a lino block print outcome. We hope to scan and post some examples to show later in the term.

The new Y7 gave everyone a real treat earlier in the first term with 'In to Africa', a cross arts project that involved all four departments in the arts. In a two day marathon creative spell they generated art work for sets and performance including a massive 10ft spider and made compositions in music and dance. These were all brought together after school on the second day with improvised drama performances impressing an enthusiastic audience of family and friends. It was a great start to their work at Tapton in the arts.
